Discover my favorite places to explore, photograph, and fall in love with along the Northern California shoreline.

Exploring the Beauty of Fort Bragg and the Mendocino Coast

The Mendocino Coast is a place of endless inspiration — where rugged cliffs meet the Pacific Ocean, and every moment feels like a picture waiting to be taken. As a photographer, I’m grateful to live and work in one of the most breathtaking regions of Northern California. From the colorful shores of Glass Beach and the historic glow of Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, to the soft sands of Pudding Creek Beach and the vibrant blooms of the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, each location holds its own story and charm. The coastal towns of Fort Bragg and Mendocino bring even more beauty to the journey — filled with character, history, and a welcoming spirit that make every visit unforgettable. Through my photography, I hope to share not only the scenery but also the feeling of being here — where every wave, sunset, and quiet path reminds us just how special this coast truly is.

I have divided the locations into sections that include:

  • Fort Bragg
  • Glass Beach
  • Point Cabrillo Lighthouse
  • Pudding Creek Beach
  • Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens
  • The Town of Mendocino

I hope this list is helpful — these are some of my favorite locations to photograph in Mendocino County. Each spot offers its own unique beauty and charm, from the rugged coastline to the peaceful gardens and historic landmarks that make this area so special.

Heart of the Mendocino Coast

Fort Bragg

Fort Bragg is a coastal gem that beautifully blends rugged ocean views with the warmth of a small-town community. Founded in the mid-1800s as a military outpost, it has grown into a vibrant seaside town known for its friendly locals, historic charm, and incredible scenery at every turn.

From the famous Glass Beach and the historic Pudding Creek Trestle to the lively harbor and scenic coastal trails, Fort Bragg offers countless ways to experience the beauty of Northern California’s coastline. Strolling through downtown, you’ll find inviting shops, local art galleries, and restaurants serving fresh seafood and regional wines — all with that relaxed, coastal spirit that makes Fort Bragg so special.

For me, Fort Bragg is more than just a favorite photography destination — it’s home. It’s where crashing waves, ocean breezes, and golden sunsets come together to create some of the most breathtaking backdrops imaginable. Whether you’re here for a photo session, a weekend getaway, or simply to enjoy the views, Fort Bragg captures the true essence of coastal California — natural, welcoming, and endlessly inspiring.

A Treasure of Color and History

Glass Beach

Glass Beach is one of Fort Bragg’s most iconic and fascinating spots. What was once a city dump decades ago has transformed into a stunning shoreline filled with smooth, colorful pieces of sea glass — a true example of nature’s ability to turn something ordinary into something extraordinary.

When the sunlight hits the glass just right, the beach sparkles with shades of emerald green, cobalt blue, amber, and clear crystal — creating a magical canvas for photography. It’s one of my favorite places to visit for capturing texture, color, and reflection. Every tide brings something new to discover, making each photo session beautifully unique.

Whether you’re visiting for a peaceful walk, collecting memories (not glass), or planning a photo session, Glass Beach is a reminder of how time and nature can create unexpected beauty. It’s a must-see destination for anyone exploring the Mendocino Coast.

A Beacon of Coastal Charm

Point Cabrillo Lighthouse

Standing proudly on the windswept bluffs between Fort Bragg and Mendocino, the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse is a timeless symbol of coastal beauty and history. Built in 1909, this working lighthouse has guided mariners for over a century — and continues to capture the hearts of visitors and photographers alike.

The path leading to the lighthouse is a peaceful walk surrounded by ocean views, coastal wildflowers, and the sound of waves breaking against the cliffs. When the golden light of sunset hits the tower, it creates a breathtaking glow that feels almost magical through the lens.

For me, photographing Point Cabrillo is about more than capturing a landmark — it’s about preserving the feeling of serenity and wonder that this place brings. Whether you visit during a foggy morning or a clear evening, the lighthouse stands as a reminder of strength, beauty, and the enduring spirit of the Mendocino Coast.

Love Captured at Sunset

This photograph holds a special place in my heart because it isn’t just another image—it’s a memory with my husband, captured in Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, south of Fort Bragg as the sun slipped beyond the horizon. That evening, I was out photographing the ocean, the vibrant skies, and the way the light danced across the waves. But in the middle of all that natural wonder, I realized the most meaningful subject was right beside me.

With the camera timer set, we stepped in front of the lens together, framed by the glowing sky. The waves rolled in, the sun painted the water in gold, and in that quiet moment we shared a kiss as the shutter clicked.
Photography often allows me to capture the love stories of others, but this photograph is a reminder of my own. It’s a piece of art that will forever bring me back to that evening—the warmth of the sunset, the sound of the ocean, and the strength of the bond we share. Sometimes the most breathtaking images are the ones we create for ourselves.

Where Every Session Feels Like Magic

Pudding Creek Beach

Pudding Creek Beach has become one of my favorite spots for photo sessions along the Mendocino Coast. Just north of the Pudding Creek Trestle, this stretch of beach offers a perfect blend of soft sand, dramatic cliffs, and the gentle rhythm of the ocean. It’s a place where families, couples, and seniors can truly relax and enjoy the beauty of the moment.

The lighting here is simply beautiful — soft and golden in the evening, creating the perfect backdrop for portraits. The iconic trestle bridge adds a touch of history and character to every shot, and the wide-open shoreline gives plenty of room to explore creative angles and natural moments.

No matter the season, Pudding Creek Beach always offers something special — whether it’s the sound of waves at sunset, the glow of the sky after a storm, or the laughter of families enjoying a day by the water. It’s one of those rare places where every visit feels fresh, peaceful, and full of inspiration.

A Garden by the Sea

Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens

Nestled between Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean, the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is one of the most enchanting places to explore and photograph. Spanning 47 acres of oceanfront beauty, the gardens are home to vibrant blooms, winding trails, and breathtaking coastal views — a true paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike.

Every season brings something new to capture — from the dazzling rhododendrons in spring to the colorful dahlias and roses in summer, and the peaceful coastal meadows year-round. The pathways lead through lush forests, open fields, and finally to dramatic ocean bluffs where wildflowers meet the sea.

For photography, the gardens offer endless inspiration: soft natural light, beautiful textures, and quiet moments that feel timeless. It’s the perfect place for portraits, engagement sessions, or simply finding peace surrounded by nature’s artistry. Whether you come to take photos or just take it all in, the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is a reminder of how beauty flourishes when nature and care come together.

Coastal Charm and Timeless Beauty

The Town of Mendocino

The town of Mendocino is like stepping into a postcard — a quaint coastal village perched on dramatic ocean bluffs, surrounded by natural beauty in every direction. With its historic architecture, charming shops, and welcoming small-town feel, Mendocino is the heart and soul of the Northern California coast.

Strolling through town, you’ll find art galleries, cozy cafés, and ocean-view paths that invite you to slow down and take it all in. Every corner seems to tell a story — from the weathered fences wrapped in flowers to the sound of the waves echoing in the distance. It’s a place where time moves a little slower, where creativity thrives, and where inspiration is always close by.

For photographers, Mendocino offers endless opportunities — stunning cliffside views, golden sunsets, and picturesque streets that glow with coastal light. But beyond the scenery, it’s the feeling of Mendocino that stays with you: peaceful, timeless, and full of coastal charm. Whether you’re visiting for a day or returning year after year, this little town has a way of capturing your heart.
