Simple Tips for a Relaxed, Fun, and Meaningful Pet Photography Experience
Your pet doesn’t have to sit perfectly, look at the camera, or behave like a professional model to have beautiful photographs.
In fact, some of my favorite pet photographs happen in the moments when pets are simply being themselves—running, exploring, cuddling, looking curious, or giving you that expression that makes you smile.
A little preparation before your session can help your pet feel more comfortable and allow us to capture those genuine moments that make their personality shine.
🐾 Before the Session
Give Your Pet Some Exercise
If your pet has lots of energy, a little exercise before your session can help take the edge off.
For dogs, a walk or some playtime before your session can be helpful. Just be careful not to overdo it. We still want your pet to have enough energy to explore and interact during the session.
For cats and other pets, simply allowing them some quiet time before we begin can help them feel relaxed.
Keep Mealtime in Mind
Try not to give your pet a large meal immediately before the session. A comfortable pet is generally happier and more willing to participate.
Bring some of their favorite treats with you. Small treats can be a wonderful way to reward your pet and help get their attention when we need it.
Bring Their Favorite Things
Your pet's favorite toy, blanket, ball, or other familiar item can help them feel more comfortable.
These items can also become part of the story we are telling about your pet.
Sometimes a favorite toy is all we need to get that perfect expression!
🐕 Grooming Your Pet
If your pet needs grooming, try to schedule it a day or two before your session rather than immediately beforehand.
This gives their coat a little time to settle naturally.
For dogs, consider brushing them before the session and wiping away any eye discharge or dirt around their face.
For long-haired pets, make sure their coat is free of major tangles.
And remember—your pet doesn't have to look perfect. I want to photograph them as they truly are.
🦴 Bring a Few Essentials
I recommend bringing a small bag with:
- Your pet's favorite treats
- Favorite toy
- Water and a bowl
- Leash and collar
- Waste bags
- Brush or comb
- Any medications or special items your pet may need
- A towel if we're photographing near water
If your pet has a favorite squeaky toy or something that gets their attention, definitely bring it!
📸 Don't Worry About Perfect Behavior
This is probably the most important thing I want pet parents to know:
Your pet does not have to be perfectly behaved.
Pets get distracted. They sniff. They wander. They look in the opposite direction. They get excited. They sometimes decide they would rather be doing something completely different.
That's okay.
I work with your pet's personality rather than trying to force them into a particular pose.
Some pets need a little time to warm up. Others are ready to go the moment they arrive. We will take the time your pet needs.
❤️ Let Your Pet Be Themselves
The goal of your pet photography session isn't to create a picture-perfect version of your pet.
It's to capture your pet.
Their personality.
Their expressions.
Their little quirks.
The way they look at you.
The way they run.
The way they cuddle.
The silly moments you never want to forget.
Those are the photographs that become meaningful over time.
🌿 Choosing the Right Location
Location can make a big difference in your pet's comfort level.
Some pets are happiest at home, while others love exploring new places.
When planning your session, we'll talk about your pet's personality and choose a location that works for them.
For outdoor sessions, I also consider things such as temperature, lighting, surroundings, and your pet's safety.
My goal is always to create an experience that feels relaxed and enjoyable—not stressful.
🐾 Safety Comes First
Your pet's safety is always more important than getting a photograph.
Please let me know ahead of time if your pet is nervous around strangers, reactive around other animals, has mobility limitations, or has any special needs.
This information helps me plan the session around your pet.
For outdoor sessions, keeping your pet safely secured when needed is especially important. We can always remove leashes from photographs during editing when appropriate, but we cannot replace a lost pet.
📷 Most of All—Have Fun!
Your pet can sense your energy.
If you're relaxed and enjoying the experience, they are more likely to relax too.
Don't worry about whether they're sitting correctly or looking at the camera every second.
Talk to them. Laugh with them. Give them love. Let them explore.
Those genuine interactions often create some of the most beautiful photographs.

One of the most meaningful parts of being a pet photographer is knowing that the photographs I create can become treasured memories long after a beloved pet is gone.
Over the years, I have had the honor of photographing animals who have since crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Looking back at their photographs reminds me why documenting these relationships is so important.
Our pets are with us for such a short part of our lives, but the love they give us stays with us forever.
A photograph can bring back the way they looked at you, the sparkle in their eyes, their favorite expression, or simply the feeling of having them by your side.
These are more than photographs.
