Creating Character: A Headshot Session with Layne

Sometimes a single portrait becomes more than just a photograph — it becomes a masterpiece.

Person with long hair in dark clothing, looking to the side in a dimly lit environment.

When Layne reached out to me about creating new headshots, he had a clear vision in mind. He’s pursuing roles in horror films and wanted images that reflected the darker, more atmospheric style often seen in the genre. As a photographer, I love when a client comes in with a creative direction—it gives us the opportunity to build something unique together.

For this session, we focused on mood and emotion. Using natural light and a darker setting, I wanted to create portraits that felt cinematic and intense. The shadows, soft highlights, and deep tones help bring out a sense of mystery, which fits perfectly with the kind of characters Layne hopes to portray on screen.

Layne brought a quiet intensity to the session that translated beautifully through the lens. In some moments he looked distant and reflective, and in others there was a stronger, more confrontational presence. That range is exactly what casting directors often want to see in a strong headshot.

Headshots are more than just a photograph—they’re often the first impression someone makes in the acting world. My goal during sessions like this is to help actors capture an image that tells a story about who they are and the roles they’re ready to step into.

Working with Layne was a great experience, and I’m excited to see where his journey in film takes him next. With determination and the right opportunities, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him appearing on screen in the near future.
