Capturing the Heart of Halloween, Past and Present
There’s something special about Halloween—the way the crisp autumn air carries the scent of fallen leaves, the soft glow of pumpkins lighting up porches, and the laughter echoing through the streets. Long before it became a night of costumes and candy, Halloween began as the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. It marked the end of harvest and the beginning of winter, a time when people believed the boundary between the living and the spirit world was at its thinnest. Over the centuries, these customs blended with Christian traditions, transforming into All Hallows’ Eve, and later the modern celebration we know today. Though the holiday has evolved, the essence of connection, creativity, and community remains the same.
Growing up, Halloween was always one of my favorite times of the year. I remember the anticipation of planning my costume weeks in advance, the sound of leaves crunching under my shoes, and the excitement of running door to door with friends until our candy bags were too heavy to carry. The decorations were simpler then—homemade paper ghosts, carved pumpkins, and candlelit windows—but the joy felt enormous. My parents made every holiday feel special, but Halloween had its own charm—a night when imagination truly came alive and the ordinary became a little bit magical.
When my children were young, I found myself reliving that same excitement through their eyes. Our home would fill with the buzz of creativity as we put together costumes and decorated pumpkins on the kitchen table. I can still picture their laughter as they dashed from house to house, their costumes glowing under the streetlights. It wasn’t just about the candy; it was about the moments we shared—the photos, the giggles, the traditions passed down without realizing it. Each Halloween brought new memories, and every year I felt grateful to be part of those moments that stitched our family closer together.
Now, as a grandmother, Halloween feels even more meaningful. Watching my grandchildren experience the same traditions fills my heart with nostalgia and pride. The costumes may be more elaborate and the decorations brighter, but that same sense of wonder still shines in their eyes. I love seeing them light up at the sight of a carved pumpkin or hearing them plan their costumes with the same excitement I once had. Halloween, to me, is more than a holiday—it’s a thread that ties generations together. It reminds me that joy, imagination, and love never go out of style; they simply grow and transform, much like the families who celebrate them year after year.
October has also become one of my favorite months to photograph. The golden light, the earthy colors, and the moody skies all tell their own stories. There’s a softness to the air and a beauty in the changing leaves that make every photo feel timeless. Whether it’s a family session wrapped in cozy sweaters or a landscape bathed in that perfect autumn glow, October always offers something magical. Through my lens, I get to capture not just the beauty of the season—but the feeling of it. And that, to me, is the heart of why I love this time of year.
